As Homecoming week approached, students in Jennifer Howard’s Leadership class prepared for the Friday rally by designing posters and putting up reminders.
The class had brainstormed together to come up with ideas for the theme for Spirit Week, which happened from 10/21 to 10/25 and ended with the rally, football game, Homecoming dance, and the following day, the school’s 150th Anniversary Celebration.
“I can’t afford to fail,” senior PHA student Denilson Garibo said, explaining that he loves to decorate and plan activities. “The lifestyle I want is expensive.”
O-High isn’t the only school to show school spirit with a Homecoming week. McClymonds and Oakland Tech both had their Homecoming dance and rally the previous week, from 10/14 to 10/18.
At Oakland High, Homecoming has always been a competition between grades, to see who can raise the most money for their class account. This tradition has been going on for about 15 years. The decorations from the class have improved, said Howard.
“Fridays are always the crazy days,” said Howard.
Howard has been teaching at O-High English for 13 years, and has been teaching Leadership for 2 years. She loves the mixed diversity of students that she meets and work with.
“Let’s show our Wildcat pride and have a great Homecoming week,” said Howard.
