Preparations are underway for ceremony on Oakland High field

Principal Matin Abdel-qawi announced that they’re hosting the senior graduation on the Oakland High field on Friday, May 31 from 4 – 6 p.m. The graduation will be hosted on the field instead of at the Paramount Theatre, where it’s usually held, because of a schedule change.
Ana Vasquez, an assistant principal, is in charge of a committee planning the graduation ceremony. The committee has made arrangements for a portable stage with 150 chairs on both sides of the stage for the more than 300 graduating students to sit. Guests will sit on the bleachers. Each senior is allowed to bring five guests, currently.
The theme for the graduation is “Believe, Achieve, Succeed.” The school’s staff are keeping up with the weather and hopes it doesn’t rain on May 31. Principal Matin Abdel-qawi joked that if it does rain, each student can bring their “favorite guest” into the school theater instead.
Seniors rehearsed for the graduation in the fog on the morning of Thursday, May 30, while other students finished taking final exams.
Although some seniors are sad that they won’t graduate at the Paramount, many alumni were proud to graduate from the field in the past.
“I love the idea that students get to walk as OHS Wildcats for the last time and graduate on their campus,” said Vasquez.
