Oakland High’s very own football coach, Jayce Goree, was chosen for the Oakland Raiders’ Tom Flores Coach of the Week award on Oct. 19.
Each week, the Raiders choose a coach from the Oakland and Las Vegas areas for the award. The schools receive a $1,000 donation to their football program.
“It’s a nice award to have,’’ Goree said. “It kinda makes it feel like our work doesn’t go in vain.”
This is not the first time Goree has won the award. He is a three-time winner with his other wins coming in 2013 and 2015. It’s also not first time Oakland High has received a donation from the Raiders. Just a few months ago, the Raiders donated $100,000 to help keep the Oakland Athletic League from having to cut the sports budget drastically.
When asked about his coach being honored, freshman Sione Fangupo, who plays for Oakland High freshman team, was emphatic. “He deserves it,” Fangupo said. “He’s the best coach I know.”
Goree has had multiple players go on to play for top level college football teams, and it appears he’ll have one more to add to his resume soon. Senior Siale Liku, a defensive end, has received offers from Colorado, Oregon State, UCLA, Cal Berkeley, and Illinois, among others.
Many of Goree’s players credit him with their success, including freshman Trevonne Shanklin.
“He’s really smart,” Shanklin said. “He helps us be our best on and off the field.”
