Summer is the season where students get to take a mental and physical break from school and then look forward to school starting at the end of August, but OUSD has taken a turn and decided to end summer a little earlier with school starting on Aug. 13, 2018 and school will end on May 30, 2019.
Students at Oakland High have mixed feelings about this change in the schedule, which will mean a shorter summer vacation in 2018.
“I think it should be stopped,” said upcoming senior Alana Russ. “We’ll have a three-month summer next year and get out early but I feel like we don’t have enough time this year because we have one month but I’m neutral about it. There’s pros and cons.”
“I feel like it’s a short summer but it’s going to fit our schedule to have finals,” said rising senior Khirah McCoy. “Also we get out earlier, so that’s not bad.”
Then there are students who feel that the early start of school isn’t really as helpful as it seems to be. Even there though are good things to come from this students still feel this isn’t really the best choice.
“Summer is getting shorter each year,” said rising senior Itzel Tovar. “Even though it means that we have more time for our education, it’s not fair because we’ve been in school for a year and don’t have time for summer to do stuff or relax especially since it’ll go by faster.”
Although some students are confused about it, our administrators of Oakland High have been thinking about making this happen for some time.
“This has been something that have been developing over the last few years. School has been starting earlier each year,” said Oakland High Principal Matin Abdel-Qawi. “It allows for the first semester to end before winter break. Also it allows students to take college classes and for the dual enrollment schedule to be aligned with the Peralta Colleges schedule.”
