Screenings catch students’ health needs

Oakland High’s Wellness Center offered vision and hearing screenings for students that need it, and Asian Health Services provided free dental screenings for all of OUSD on Nov. 7
It’s mandatory for sophomores to take a vision and hearing to test to make sure that they have no problems with their hearing and vision, according to school nurse Linh Nguyen. Some other students also took the screening.
“This screening is [also] for people that never had a screening before,” said Nguyen. “It’s for people that never had health care before or people that traveled here from another country.”
Schools around the OUSD provide the same services.
As of Nov. 7, the Wellness Center had screened all 500 tenth-graders and Nguyen had seen and screened about 492 students in total, Nguyen said.
Sophomore Amy Li took the screening and said “I feel terrific.”
