Dove is a personal care brand that is really popular in the United States. It was first introduced in 1955 and ever since then, most people has been using Dove products .
Dove was the most popular bar soap in the United States in 2016 according to Statista, but then the company went downhill when a commercial for Dove came out that offended almost everyone.
On Saturday, Oct. 7, Dove released a commercial of an African American woman using a Dove soap bar and then pulling her shirt off showing a white woman. Many people found it offensive because the ad seemed to be saying that African Americans were dirty while white people were clean.
After this commercial, we swore not to buy any more of their products and banned them in our houses. We used to buy their hand soap and conditioner for the smell and found the products gentle on the skin. Now we have to explore a new brand of hand soap because we can’t buy the beauty bar from Dove.
When we first saw this commercial, we knew that Dove’s sales were going to decrease a lot. Watching the commercial disgusted us and after that, we have bought different brands of soaps and lotions.
The owners of Dove publically apologized for the commercial on Saturday, Oct. 14. Even after they apologized, we would never buy their products because they released the video.
Dove is known for advertising for gentle soaps, but should’ve known better then to release a racist message. The video shouldn’t have existed in the first place and it is still available on the internet even though Dove took it down. We as consumers need to be alert to the company’s messages, whether they are intentional or not.
When we see a message that is racist, offensive, or goes beyond our beliefs we need to call out the issue and boycott their products. If they won’t listen to our concerns, maybe they’ll listen to the decrease of their profits.
