Dear Athena,

I have no friends and I am really lonely at lunch. I am shy but I am working on trying to talk to people more. I’m tired of staying in my teacher’s classroom at lunch with no one to talk to. How do I find a good group of friends to hang out with and where do I go?

—Lonely

Dear Lonely,

The best way to make new friends is to find people who have common interests as you. I would suggest joining clubs because many clubs meet during lunch. Joining clubs will allow you to connect with people who share the same interests as you, which means you’ll have something to talk about! Not only will you meet new people, but you’ll spend your lunch time with them too.

Some clubs that meet during lunch include BuildOn, Anime Club, Lion Dance Club, VSA, and Adventure Club. If you want to know more about clubs, you can ask teachers, friends, or look at posters around the school.

However, if you do not want to join a club, you can try talking to people you share the same classes with. You can start a conversation by asking them questions regarding the work, or questions to get to know them more. Be brave!

Your shield,

Athena
