JV volleyball off to stronger start than Varsity
By Gieanne Aldana
Despite an upsetting loss to Oakland Tech on Sept. 15 , the OHS girls’ volleyball varsity team won against Castlemont on Tuesday, Sept. 19, 3 sets to 1, but lost against Skyline on Thursday, Sept. 21.
Meanwhile, the JV team is now on a winning streak, having defeated Tech, Castlemont and Skyline all 2 sets to 0.
“They need to improve on covering the holes in the court (part of the court where there is no person),” said varsity coach Isabel Toscano. “They need to maintain their blocking and their communication in the front row.”
The last time the girls’ JV team won a championship was back in 2015. Both teams are striving to get into the finals.
Keith Stoker, the coach of the girls JV team, said that the team needs to work on communicating in the court. He also included that their serves are on point and they need to maintain that strength. He added that they should improve on covering tips from the opponent.
Sophomore Samira Smith, the JV team captain, said, “It is fun to have the opportunity and responsibility to encourage my teammates.”
“It’s great being in JV,” said JV team setter Jenie Galicia, a sophomore. “I like the vibe of the team. It is exciting since I’m trying out a new position as a setter.”
One of the setters of the varsity team, sophomore Daniela Castillo, said that being in the varsity is enjoying and that she is liking the experience.
Both of the coaches said that it is rewarding to see the girls improve and grow over the years. Both teams are doing their best to get into the top and make it to the finals. Their game schedules are always Tuesday and Thursday. This week, they’re going up against Madison Park and Life Academy.
