‘Grey’ areas

Film lacks depth, but is still fun
By Terri Tu

The new movie Fifty Shades of Grey is based on an erotic romantic novel. It tells the story of a college student named Anastasia Steele who substitutes for her friend as a journalist, interviewing rich businessman Christian Grey. After the interview, they bump into each other which makes Anastasia more attracted to Grey. Then more things start to become intense.

The Fifty Shades of Grey novel was published in June 2011, and led to sequels such as Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed. In February 2015, the Fifty Shades of Grey movie came out in theaters.

I thought the movie was very intense, especially for a 14-year-old to watch. I could say that I was shocked by watching it. The parts where it showed nudity were not full-body nudity, but I’m still surprised how actors can show some nudity in movies.

I guess that since the movie was based on an erotic romantic story, it’s okay to make these kinds of movies where it includes sex and nudity because it’s normal. If Fifty Shades of Grey didn’t show much of the parts that were in the novel, it would’ve been just nonstop nonsense!

After watching Fifty Shades of Grey, I thought to myself that I was actually excited to see the sequels, to get a sense where it continues. Fifty Shades Darker is coming out in 2017 according to the Internet Movie Database.

If you’re not a fan of seeing any nudity, this is not the movie for you! If you are comfortable seeing explicit sex scenes, then you should totally watch it!

Many say Fifty Shades of Grey didn’t make any sense, and that it’s not worth watching. Freshman Mae Cauilan said the film was, “Feminist, hella sexual, like a porn,” adding that it felt like, “Watching porn for $8.”

Overall, I give this film a B+. I thought the story behind Fifty Shades of Grey needed more information about Christian’s or Anastasia’s life, but the emotion comes through even though the story isn’t there.
