Teachers shouldn’t give us homework over the weekend

Not only at Oakland High, but throughout the school district, teachers are giving their students homework over the weekend when they have already received and completed homework over the school week. A lot of the students complain and ask, “Why do we have homework over the weekend? Why can’t we have a break?“ I know the teachers want us to practice and learn more. But many students disagree with the principle of weekend homework, and some of them don’t even bother doing it.
Teachers throughout the school district should understand and know that the students need a break over the weekend. Less homework will give us less headaches. Working hard in class every day, every week, only calls for one thing: a break from all the stress that homework has put on us. It’s a toll that we cannot escape. It’s what restrains us from completing other things besides school work.
“I don’t like having homework over the weekend,” said sophomore Jerelyn Esteves, of San Lorenzo High School. “I want to spend my Saturday and Sunday relaxing.”
Some teachers want us to get good grades and understand the materials being taught in class; that’s why they want us to do homework over the weekend. But having a lots of homework give us students a headache.
“The purpose of homework is for students to practice what they’ve learned in class and isn’t about learning new things,” said English teacher Jessica Forbes. “Teachers give the students homework over the weekend so that students won’t forget what they have learned during the week.”
For me, I disagree with having homework over the weekend. I have already learned what I need to learn. I’ve been working hard in each of my classes and on top of that, I’ve been doing every single class and homework assignment, so I need a break. Sometimes, too much homework gives me a headache. My teachers have told me that doing a lot of homework will help me on my tests. I agree with the teachers, but I also think it’s a problem to be stressing over homework on the weekends when we could be relaxing for the upcoming school week.
I see a lot of students not doing their homework over the weekend, but if teachers assigned homework every day, but not during the weekends, students would be more determined to do their homework.
I hope that the teachers at every school change the rule about giving out homework over the weekend and give us a break.
