Want to go to the movies but you and your friends can’t decide which movie to watch in a never ending list of movies to experience? We interviewed students at Oakland High and brought you the overview and input of three 2012 movies that might spark your interest.
The Hunger Games
A sci fi drama that pits teenagers against eachother in a post apocalyptic world and televised for the sole purpose of entertainment? Unthinkable right? Wrong! Written by Suzanne Collins, the anticpated Hunger Games hits the big screen this year. From each district in a future city, one male and one female teen are chosen to compete to the death with 11 other boy-girl pairs from the other surrounding districts. Katniss Everdeen played by Jennifer Lawrence is not chosen as the candidate to compete in the so called Hunger Games, but agrees to volunteer after a much younger candidate is chosen. A noble and admirable thing to do in such a situation, Katniss has pitted herself in an unthinkable situation where only one team emerges alive among the 24 chosen.
“I’m really looking forward to the Hunger Games,” said junior Jimmy Tran. “The book was a great read. I just don’t make major changes in the movie that totally stray away from the movie.”
The Dark Knight Rises
Next on our list is our caped crusader returning again for the finale of the Dark Knight Rises. The Batman (Christian Bale) has to cope with the outcomes of the previous film, in which Batman poses as the killer of Gotham’s White Knight Harvey Dent in order to protect Dent’s reputation as Gotham’s savior, one who couldn’t be turned evil for any reason. Dent does indeed turn evil and Batman has to take the rap. So with the whole city against him, Batman faces his new villain Bane: a muscular, huge, and imposing figure whose titanic stature will prove a challenge for the more agile but cunning Batman.
“Coming from a pretty big DC fan, I still don’t believe the movie will be as good as the animated series,” said junior Brandon Tran. “But the movie looks like it would be good for the fans of the previous Batman movies. As for topping the previous film… most likely it will because it is the grand finale and I’m sure they can pull it off.”
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
The third and final movie of our rundown of anticipated movies of 2012 is The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. For fans of the trilogy Lord of the Rings, this movie follows the adventures of a younger hobbit by the name of Bilbo Baggins, long-time mentor of Frodo who was the main protagonist in the Lord of the Rings. Bilbo Baggins, along with his 13 dwarf companions, sets out on a journey to defeat a menacing dragon that terrorizes the Dwarven Kingdom. For fans of the previous series, the film will not be lacking in our longtime loved characters of the previous series including iconic Gandalf played by Ian McKellen, Galadriel played by Cate Blanchett, and even our main protagonist of the previous series Frodo played by Elijah Wood.
“The trilogy of the Lord of The Rings was awesome,” said junior Jason Lay. “I’m interested actually to know the back story of Frodo’s long time mentor and to see what special effects they use for the dragons. Should be cool.”
Three movies that might spark your interest with input from three fellow OHS students. While these three movies might not be your top three movies, they definitely will stand out in your mind when deciding to to go to the movies in 2012 and might just have extra arguments to see the movie you want rather than that pesky friend whose mind can’t be changed.
