Can an electric car save the world?
Steven Phan
Many OHS students drive; some are in the market for new cars. What they should consider are fuel-efficient hybrid vehicles which have low emissions. These vehicles could both help the earth and save them money on fuel, which is why students should buy these as their first car.
At the beginning of the 21st century, the demand for low-emissions, fuel-efficient vehicles skyrocketed. Car buyers wanted to help the environment and save money on fuel.
In the past five years, fuel demand and prices have risen dramatically. In response, consumers now want fuel-efficient vehicles more than ever before. One such vehicle, the Chevrolet Volt, is notable for running on electricity in addition to gasoline.
“I’d love to buy a hybrid car!” said senior Teresa Lew. “I’ll save gas and the environment.”
The use of hybrid and electric vehicles can solve today’s energy crisis and solve global warming because they don’t emit as much pollution as their traditional gasoline-powered counterparts.
Some may argue that electric cars are way too expensive and unaffordable to many. But if we buy them now it may be cheaper because a decade from now the demand for electric vehicles may rise; if the demand rises the price may also rise. So in a sense it would be smarter to invest in an electric vehicle now.
“I’d buy an electric vehicle,” said senior Mario Sanabria, “because they are environment-friendly.”
Although the energy used to create the electricity to run the cars may be fossil fuels, it’s cleaner than what we use now since the pollution isn’t coming from the cars. Hybrid and electric cars will someday save the world by not polluting the air. Make that future closer now by buying environmentally-friendly vehicles.
