Baseball team considering a move
By Steven Phan

As the Oakland A’s plan a move to a new stadium in San Jose, A’s fans at Oakland High are devastated because they may lose their hometown team.

Some Oakland High students have been long time A’s fans since they were young and would be torn if the A’s moved.

“I think the A’s moving is a bad idea because people are going to have to travel further and the A’s have been part of Oakland for an incredible amount of time,” said junior Carlos Moreno. ”If the A’s move I would be infuriated, because I have been an A’s fan since I was very young.” The Oakland Athletics have been part of Oakland since 1968. Their move is not yet set in stone, but until they can get a new stadium built, they will be staying in Oakland.

The Oakland Athletics could soon be the San Jose Athletics if they were to move to that town. They are now waiting on permission from the San Francisco Giants since the Giants own territorial rights to the area. Once that has been worked out and if the Athletics can get a stadium built, the move is almost guaranteed. The Sharks hockey team in San Jose dropped all objections to the move after the city agreed to allow them to build a new parking lot.

Back in 2006, there was a rumor swirling around about the A’s moving to Fremont. That rumor was crushed in 2009 when the A’s announced their move to San Jose. The Coliseum’s capacity for baseball is only 34,077, making it the smallest stadium in Major League Baseball. The average attendance for every game in 2009 was 17,392, which is a little bit more than half full.

“Who cares about the A’s?” said sophomore Austin Woo. “They haven’t won a big game in over 3 years.” The last time the A’s won a playoff game was in 2006 against the Minnesota Twins.

Some people don’t care about the A’s and don’t really care if they move. But others who are diehard A’s fans say we need a baseball team in Oakland because it represents Oaklanders to the rest of the U.S.
